DIY Kid’s Room Wall Art :: Pom Pom Wall Hanging

DIY yarn project wall

Inspired by blank walls and not wanting to spend money on wall tchotchkes, I searched Pinterest for a way to use what was in my stash of DIY supplies to decorate my son’s room. Having lots of yarn I decided a pom pom wall hanging would work. It’s pretty easy and not too time consuming if you’ve already got these supplies on hand:

  • different spools of yarn
  • needle
  • a dowel or stick
  • scissors
  • string
  • 2 cup hooks for hanging

STEP 1:  MAKE SOME POM POMS

Choose the colors you want to work with and set those aside. You can mix them together to make multi-colored poms or make solid color ones. I liked making ones of different sizes to add some variety.

To make a pom:

Wrap the yarn around 4 fingers about 40 times. Cut the string after the last wrap around and slide the bundled loop of yarn off your hand.

Lay the loop of yarn down and cut a new, separate string about 7 inches in length. Tie this separate string around the center of your yarn bundle as tightly as you can make it. Slide the scissors through on end of the looped yarn bundle and cut. Do the same to the other end of the bundle.

Trim the edges so it’s even on both sides then fluff.

STEP 2: STRING YOUR POMS

Once you have a good variety of poms in different sizes and colors, lay them out in the pattern you want them to hang.

Cut a string a 4 inches longer than you’d like the strand to hang. Attach it to your dowel or stick with a secure triple knot.

Thread the string through your needle.  Slide the needle through the middle of your top pom and place it where you want the first pom to be. Secure it in place by guiding the needle through the pom again, just as you had before (in the same direction) and pull the string through tightly when it’s in place. Your pom should now be secure and you can string the other poms on the same way.

Once all poms are on the string, finish by tying the last string in a triple knot in the center of the last pom.

Trim any extra string.

Repeat this for each strand of poms, screw in your cup hooks and hang. Make sure little hands cannot reach the poms or strings! Done.
