I always knew I wanted to be a mom.
However, I don’t remember ever putting any thought into the type of mom I wanted to be. Would I be like my mother? (Oh! goodness gracious.)
Would I be a “fun” mom? A mean mom? A working mom?
When I had my first child at 23 I was flabbergasted that they actually let me leave the hospital with my baby.
Didn’t they know that I had no clue how to be a mom?
Weren’t they suppose to ask for proof that I could handle it?
Those first few months were filled with dirty diapers, sleepless hours and self doubt, soon enough I started to morph into a mom. Since then, everyday, with every new experience I learn what type of mom I am….and It’s not always pretty.
Yet, I still feel like I want to be a certain “type” of mom. A better mom, because just as I learn a stage of mommyhood, it changes again…and I feel lost, frustrated, wondering how to be “that” mom again.
That’s why I want to HAVE IT TOGETHER!
I want to be the mom that knows how to sew on a button, hem pants, or make that obscure Halloween costume.
I want to know how cook, and I don’t mean the quesadilla and pasta kind of cook. I want to know how to make those classic dishes that only grandma’s cook (without having to be a grandma).
I want to be the mom that makes those really cute creative Valentine’s Day cards from Pinterest, and those “end of the school year” crafty gifts.
I want to be good at math and science and help my kids with that oh so fun! Volcano project.
To be the mom that looks put together every morning when she drops off the kids at school. To wear make up and earrings and actual clothes, not gym workout stuff.
Yeah, I want to be THAT mom.
I want to know what GMO’s are, buy organic and cook everything from scratch. Not the mom that resorts to fruit gummy’s as a snack.
I want to take my kids shopping to farmer’s markets and visit museums, plays and musicals, give them some culture!
I want to know how to fix my daughters broken heart when she fights with her BFF, and say the right words when my son gets picked on.
I want to inspire my kids.
I want to be the cool mom! You know, “that” kind of mom.
Have the right reaction to my kids tantrums in the middle of the mall.
I want to grow my own food, and have my kids learn to do so as well. Teach them about caring for our planet, respect and love nature.
I want to be the young mom, ALWAYS!
I want to be the mom that prays at night and every morning.
I want to know how to cure an upset stomach, hives, or get gum out of my girls hair…and can fix a flat tire!
I want to be rested and energized.
I want to be the mom that has time for “thank you” notes, handmade cards, and wrapped gifts. To do crafts with my children, and actually be good at it.
I want to have a nicely decorated home, and a clean home. (is that even possible?)
I want to be the mom, that is a good wife and partner. I want to be approachable. I want my children to know they can talk to me, and that I will listen to them. I want to be the mom that is patient, loving, nurturing, smart, fun…
I didn’t know I wanted to be this kind of mom when I left the hospital on that winter morning. But everyday that I wake up, I want to be a good mom, a better mom.
I try to forget about those moments in which I feel like a failure and remember that no one handed me a “How to be the Best Mom” handbook.
I learn everyday what type of mom I’d like to be.
What kind of mom are you? Who do you want to be?
