Friends: The 4 Friends Every Mom Needs

20

We are moms and we need friends.

However, our friendship needs have changed since children entered our lives. Our circles have become smaller and more intentional. Time is one of our most valuable commodities and we are now purposeful in how we spend it. Essentially, each friend plays a vital role in our life based on the circumstance and season.

Are we weathering a storm that a friend has experience with?

Do we need a light hearted break from our daily routine?

Do we simply need a friend to cheer us forward in our dreams and goals?

We have learned that various friends fill certain roles and we, in turn, return the blessings and favor.

The 4 Friends Every Mom Needs

Adventure Seeker

Let’s face it, there are times we need a break from our routine! Both working moms and stay at home moms can use a change of scenery on occasion! Enter in the friend that loves an adventure! One friend might send links to restaurants throughout town and take you on a foodie adventure! Perhaps your friend lives out of town and you are able to adventure through her city in search of a new hike, explore a museum, or grab appetizers at several restaurants. The adventure friends often push us out of our comfort zone into experiences we didn’t know we needed.

Life Giver/Healer

The life giver, aka healer, is the one we call in the midst of struggles. They are the friends we can be most vulnerable with. They know our hearts and love us through trials, mistakes, failures. Often, they are our spiritual warriors, life speakers, and our ultimate support system. The life giver/healer is a diamond in our treasure box of friendship.

Celebrator

Our celebrators are our greatest cheerleaders. They are natural encouragers and builders. They inspire us to keep dreaming, keep moving, and to never look back. When something positive happens in our lives and we want someone who will truly celebrate a personal win, our cheerleader is the first person we text.

Lifelong Friends

Lifelong friends can be rare. However, if we are lucky enough to have one, these are the women who have seen us through every season of our lives. We have history together. We simply “get” each other. We’ve laughed together, cried together, experienced every up and down imaginable. Though we may not see each other often, when we do, our relationship bounces back as if no time passed.

Do you have friends in each of these categories? What might you add to this list? What role do you fulfill in your friendships? Share with us! We love to hear from our readers.

  1. I may just be a little bit of all of these! I think Im mostly a cheerleader friend for sure!! I def think I have a few of the “we rarely see eachother but the moment we get together it is the same as it was the last time” whether its 1 month or 10 yrs!!! So blessed to call you my friend! Thanks for sharing. Its not the quantity of friends we have its the quality ?

  2. So important to have friends! We are blessed by them in so many ways. I have friends in each category and everyday (even in my late 30s) I’m learning how to be a better friend to those in my life including those who are not yet friends.

  3. These are great friend “types” to have, for sure! I’m so grateful to have some amazing women and mamas surrounding me in this particular season.

As for me, I find myself fitting into all these categories depending on the need I see in my friends. I’m a nurturer at heart ❀️

    Wonderful post Christelle!

  4. I hadn’t ever thought about the different “types” of friends I have – but Yes I do have one of each of these types of friends. I have a group that I call my Fab 5 – and within that group we have our cheerleader, our healer, our thrill seeker, and our celebrator. We are all life long friends – at least for the last 10 years and it is amazing how as a group we have fit the needs of each other. Great post!

  5. Once I figured out having friends in various roles was key to not feeling so alone as a SAHM, my world blossomed. I do have the ones listed above plus a Texter (our schedules are incompatible, but we keep connected via texting) and a Long-Distance Friend. I haven’t seen the Long-Distance Friend in 7 years, but we have managed to stay in touch and float in and out of each others’ lives at just the right times. I like the way you worded mom friends as being more intentional friendships. I think that’s the perfect way to say it.

    • Thank you, Jen! Friendship is a gift and I’ve found that my closest circle of intentional friendships have beautiful souls that include each of these traits. Thanks so much for taking time to comment!

  6. It’s true, since becoming a mom I have relied much more on friends than before I became a mom.
Thank you for sharing your heart.

  7. Thank you for this! Definitely in need of some of these women in my life as a mum! The lifegiver and lifelong friends are both difficult to find!
