Last Summer, I Ran Away

6

Last summer, I was in desperate need of alone time and adventure so I ran away.

I received a call from my lifelong friend, Laurie, who asked if I would like to venture North for a bit of excitement and celebration.

My friend had come up with the wonderful idea to have 40 adventures throughout her 40th year and thought it would be fun to share the adventures with friends and family. I was in desperate need of a vacation.  Yet, it was not an ideal time nor did I have the finances to make my dream of traveling the entire world with only me and my camera a reality.

Adventure awaits!
Roadtrip

I kissed my hubs and kids goodbye and began my drive north. With Lionel Richie blaring and no kids to complain about my choice of music, I hit the road. I made it to Los Angeles quite late at night so my friend and I spent the remainder of the evening chowing down on treats and laughing about memories from our high school days.

The entire weekend was carefree and spur of the moment. We made our plans after getting in the car the next morning. Our final decision was that we would take a 45 minute drive to Malibu. While there we would find a trail to hike, enjoy the gorgeous beaches, and perhaps get a bite to eat. Again, all would be figured out throughout the day.

Our first stop was Escondido Canyon and Waterfalls Trail on Winding Way. Unfortunately, the drought made the waterfall that was once part of the trail a mere trickle. However, the hike that took us through the Malibu hills was worth the trip.

Upon finishing our hike, we were extremely hot so we ventured over to the beach side of Malibu. We discovered that the beach was rather quiet and the blue waters were breathtaking. We kept our spirit of adventure rolling as we decided to head straight for the water and jump a few waves. No bathing suit, no problem! We dove right in with our clothes on. The fun was worth the wet clothes and sandy feet!

As we drove away from our mini adventure in Malibu, we both vowed to make ourselves free for last minute trips together. We left that day feeling refreshed and free from worry. And I’ve decided that once per year, it’s o.k. for me to run away. Even if only for a day or two.

If you had a chance to run away for one day and head to any spot in southern California, where would you go and what would you do? I’m always looking for my next mini adventure!

  1. I ran away last year too! Took 5 days in upstate New York with my bbf. It was wonderful!
It should be required that parents take time off too. It keeps us refreshed.
