Saying Goodbye To Our First Home

2

Moving Day can mean excitement, stress, anticipation, and exhaustion. But for me, it is more than that. How do I say goodbye to the house we brought you home to?

We just sold our first home. It’s such an exciting milestone and we’re moving on to bigger and better things.  We’re building our future as a family and that means leaving this home behind. As exciting as this time may be, I find myself sad and nostalgic. Looking at these walls that we’ve made a home, and suddenly not wanting to let go. This is the house that we brought you home to, my sweet baby.

You were so tiny and we were so nervous. Driving to the house, eager to get you to our safe place, but terrified of what this new life had in store for us: our first few nights at home or the first night you slept in your own room.  The days and weeks flew by in a blur of love, overwhelming emotion, and sleeplessness.

I look around the house and all I see is you. The exact spot in the living room where you rolled over.  Where we stood in the kitchen when you laughed for the first time. Your first steps. Once you discovered the stairs and were determined to climb! The quiet corner in your bedroom where I held you in my arms night after night. Our memories are here in this house, but as a new mom, all I see is you.

My baby is here. We’ll leave and move on and I won’t get to show you the place in our home where you took your first steps, where you rolled over, or the spot in our closet where you liked to hide. We’re leaving our first home and we’re leaving my baby behind.

Now you’re a toddler and we’ll have a new home and new memories. The spot where you rolled over will be replaced with the place that you first rode a bike or where you lost your first tooth.  I am so looking forward to these things; to watching you grow.

But still, before we go, I need to take a quiet minute to look around.  To soak in the moments we shared here and to sit in your nursery one last time.

Hi fellow San Diego Moms! My name is Danielle and I moved from New York to San Diego nine years ago. I was looking for a big change and hoping to live that "California Life." Since then, I found a job that I love, met my husband, and fully embraced the California lifestyle I was searching for. In 2016, my husband and I welcomed our daughter into the world! She is our whole world and it's hard to remember life before her. Motherhood has been the best and most exciting journey and each day it gets better and better. As for me, I am a fifth grade teacher, aspiring chef, avid reader, lover of all things DIY, entrepreneur, and co-owner of Little Aries Bows (a local San Diego flower crown, bow, and bowtie shop).

  1. I remember moving from the first home we bought together and had both of our children in. The feelings of loss, yet joy for the future made it bitter sweet. The best thing was the shedding of all the unnecessary stuff we had accumulated over time. And, the extra space!!!!

May your new home bring you years of laughter and joy! Cheers!
