4 Not So Crowded Coastal Picnic Spots

San Diego moms are blessed to raise children in near perfect weather year round.  A picnic is one of the most cost effective ways to enjoy time together as well as catch some of our incredible Southern California rays.

Sometimes, however, it’s nice to discover spots somewhat exclusive to San Diegans and away from the large crowds attracted to our awesome Spring weather. Over the years I’ve narrowed down 4 of my family’s favorite coastal picnic locations.

So pack your favorite picnic lunch or grab a boxed lunch from a local eatery and get ready to enjoy a new park this weekend with the family.

Calumet Park

calumet parkCalumet Park is nestled in the neighborhood of Bird Rock, La Jolla. The small neighborhood park has ample parking and perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon. The ocean view is spectacular. Be forewarned, however, due to the amazing views and somewhat private location, you might accidentally crash a wedding during the weekend. Calumet Park is best for families with older children as there is not a playground nor bathrooms available.

Should you decide to pack a stroller, you might choose to take a short walk to the neighborhood Starbucks or one of our favorite local coffee shops: Bird Rock Coffee Roasters.

Fletcher Cove Beach Park: Solana Beach

Fletcher Cove Beach Park

Towards the northern part of coastal San Diego is an adorable park that features a playground, basketball court, and a sandy beach for those ready to catch a wave or two. Located in Solana Beach, Fletcher Cove Park includes a parking lot, a necessity for those with small children, strollers, and several bags of food, toys, and baby supplies. The park is surrounded by local coffee shops and restaurants and a perfect place to spend the day catching up with family and friends.

Torrey Pines Gliderport

One need not take a glide in order to enjoy the magnificent views that surround Torrey Pines Gliderport. However, after enjoying the scenery and watching those in flight, you may decide to add a gliding adventure to your bucket list.

Although, this hot spot gets rather crowded on the weekends, parking is ample and the energy surrounding the location is worth a day trip. If you decide not to pack your own lunch, there is a restaurant waiting to serve you while you listen to live music from a local band.

Kate O. Sessions Memorial Park: La Jolla

Kate O Sessions Memorial Park

Kate Sessions park is a beautiful location for birthday parties and family celebrations. With gorgeous views of Mission Bay and surrounding beaches, moms may decide to leave the kids at home and grab a girlfriend to hike the trails while catching some midweek afternoon sunshine. If you decide to pack the kids, the park includes a playground, a large grass space, and both sunny and gorgeous tree spots to enjoy your picnic.

Now we ask you: What is your favorite place to picnic in San Diego County?

These all sound great. I haven’t been to any of them! We stay east (Ramona) so Dos Picos park is our favorite with playgrounds, a small lake for fishing and many hiking trails. We’ll have to head to the coast soon though. Thanks for sharing!
